Navigation Beacons- A pop up book

Description

The most recent of my pop up books this one features the navigation beacons we see when out sailing on Spencer Gulf. They each have a purpose of making sure that areas of danger are highlighted to be avoided. The Cockle Spit beacons show where the water starts to get shallow as do the Channel Markers which indicate the edge of a dredged channel in the Pirie river. The Special beacon indicates the ares to be avoided although in this case we call it the Net beacon. The X-stick was an old beacon made before GPS devices and indicated areas of mud and sand. I loved the x sticks and they made navigating around shallow areas out in the gulf, where spoil from dredging was dumped, easy as they were visible from a long way off. Now you have to keep your eye on the GPS as the sticks have been removed–regrettably.
